The NICE clinical guidelines on skin tumours outlines how healthcare services for people with skin tumours should be organised. The guidelines were published in February 2006 and state 'Protocols should cover the management of care for people in high risk or special groups'. Gorlin Syndrome patients are identified as high risk and included as a special group.
It is worth noting that the guidance also stipulates that certain types of treatment may also be needed by patients who are at greater risk from skin cancer because of their genetic make up. Gorlin Syndrome patients are included as a special group within the guidance. Despite the existence of the guidance many people affected by Gorlin Syndrome still experience lengthy delays or cancellations when accessing treatment for basal cell carcinomas.
