The skin of babies is delicate and parents should be aware of the extra dangers and know how to protect their children against the sun's harmful rays. Sun damage can also cause premature aging, wrinkles and skin cancer.
It is vital children are taught safe sun habits from an early age to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer in later years. It advisable to:
- Keep childiren in the shade whilst the sun at its highest, usually between 11 am and 3 pm.
Ensure the heads of babies and children are protected from the sun with a wide brimmed hat. Long sleeved, high density tops will protect the arms. Use sun-block or high factor sunscreen. The higher the number the better the protection. Look at the label and ensure that the product protects from UVA and UVB and that it carries a 4 star rating. Remember to re-apply regularly. A large number of retailers and web based retailers now offer sun protective clothing for children and adults. Check out the ranges at Next, Tesco, and Asda, and on-line at Suntogs and Sunsuits. A useful resource with information about staying safe in the sun is available on-line. Captain Safesun and his son Junior Safesun.
